A fawn is a baby deer which may recall Bambi, the 1942 Disney cartoon. The deer is full of symbolism and can be found in many cultures from Celtic to Christian to Greek to Hindu. The Celts, for example, tell stories and legends about the supernatural powers of deer and spiritual figures, spirits or deities may sometimes take the form of deer. Some Scottish and Irish tales tell of a old woman who can shapeshift into the form of a red or white deer. In Christian and Catholic tradition deers appear to be very close to Saints. Saint Giles, was a hermit and lived in solitary for many years and during this time his only companion was a deer. The 14th century Chronica Pictum King Saint Ladislaus and his brother the King Géza saw a deer while hunting. King Saint Ladislaus told his brother that it was not a deer they saw but a angel from heaven and its antlers were its wings. In Egypt Satet was the goddess of the hunt and was portrayed as having the horns of a deer and sometimes even the face of a deer. In Greek mythology the deer is associated with Artemis who was known as the virginal huntress.
The stag, which is the male deer, also carries weight in cultural tradition. The stag is known to be the enemy of the snake that represents the devil and evil. Stags live for a long time and it is said that Alexander the Great was so fascinated by these animals that he captured many and marked them to see how long they could live. Legend has it that the stags were alive and healthy even after 100 years. It is also believed that those who eat venison are protected from fever while the tears of a stag, if drunk, will cure any ailment of the heart. Kings would hunt stags and return to their castle triumphant, as killing a stag was a sign of strength.
This small fawn is not yet grown but represents the power of the deer and stag nonetheless. The fawn represents purity as it has yet to be exposed to the harsh realities of life. This hand crafted and painted ceramic porcelain piece is perfect to give as a gift or to embellish any living area. This would be a great gift for a new mother as it is both representative of the pure perfection of the child as well as the inner monumental strength of the mother.
Available in two variants: artistic style and realistic style.
