Beagles are small and hardy dogs that are active companions for both kids and adults. This breed of dog is both fun and loving as well as stubborn requiring patient creative training techniques. The beagle has a great sense of smell and tracking instinct and are often used in airports to detect prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs. Additionally, the beagle was and still is used to track small game such a rabbits and hare. While beagles have existed for 2,500 years the modern day beagle as we know it today was developed in Great Britain around the 1830s in a combination of breeds such as the Talbot Hound, the North Country Beagle, the Southern Hound, and possibly the Harrier. Miniature breeds of beagles which at the time were called Glove Beagles, because they were small enough to fit on a glove, were kept in packs by Edward the and Henry VII who used the dos to hunt. Queen Elizabeth kept a breed known as the pocket Beagle which was even smaller than the Glove Beagle and could be kept in a saddle bag and would ride along her during hunts. Beagles have also been featured popular culture. One of the most famous beagles, Snoopy, appeared in funny comic strips and animated cartoons from the 1950’s and was coined as “the world’s most famous Beagle.”
